Sobers to honour team of '71

The victorious Indian team of 1971 led by Ajit Wadekar will be felicitated next month by cricket legend Sir Garfield Sobers.

The side had created history by winning Test rubbers for the first time in the West Indies and England.

Sir Gary, the captain of the defeated West Indies team in that memorable series which started a new era in Indian cricket, will be the chief guest at the function to honour Wadekar and his team members at the Nehru Centre in Worli on March 4, a release said.

Apart from former Test cricketers Bapu Nadkarni and Chandu Borde, current national squad players - including India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, batting great Sachin Tendulkar and dashing opener Virender Sehwag - would be present on the occasion.

The function to celebrate "40 years of Glorious 1971" has been conceptualised by "Universal Sports and Arts Foundation", the release added.
