Gayle hoping for ODI success
Chris Gayle is hoping a win in the final ODI against Australia will give West Indies a much-needed confidence boost.
The West Indies captain wants his team to get a confidence boost heading into the two Twenty20 matches.
The Windies have failed to win on their Australian tour so far, losing the three-Test series 2-0 and trailing the Aussies 3-0 in the ODI series, with one match washed out when the tourists were in a favourable position.
Gayle feeling the heat in Australia
Following the final one-dayer, the two sides will clash in two Twenty20 internationals in Hobart on Sunday and in Sydney on Tuesday.
Australia, meanwhile, are chasing an unbeaten summer, having thrashed Pakistan 3-0 in the Test series and 5-0 in the ODI series, as well as winning the Twenty20 international.
Gayle admits that all the losses have been tough on the players, but that they will be taking a positive frame of mind into Friday's match.
"It's coming to the final game and we're looking to actually get a win under our belt so we can gain some momentum leading up the two T20s," said Gayle.
"It will be interesting tomorrow, they are on a high so we're up against it but at the same time we've still got to be positive and try and get a win out there.
"It's tough on the players because at the end of the day no-one wants to lose. To continually be losing it's getting frustrating but at the same time it's our priority to try and get the job done and keep pushing that intensity and try and get a victory under our belt.
"It's not easy as a captain ... I find it very challenging. At the same time I'm always up for the challenge and hopefully I can get a few successes late in my career.
Gayle: Poor form keeping fans away
"You still have to have that self-belief that you can go out there and get the job done. You just want to keep reminding players that even though they know what is required, sometimes you do need a bit of a reminder, even I do it sometimes."
Despite losing the three one-dayers, one positive to come out of the Windies team is the batting success of Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Smith in the middle order.
Pollard has scores of 31, 32 and 62 in his three innings, while Smith scored an unbeaten 58 and 43 in his two most recent matches.
Gayle confirmed the two might come in higher up the order if the opening batsmen do their job.
"Even though they bat late, they have still had a lot of overs to bat because the top order has been knocked over really early and exposed the middle order," he said.
"They do get opportunities to bat 20, 30 overs so it's not a big difference (where they bat), they still have the opportunity to score 100.
"Maybe if we get a good start then we can look to promote them (up the order)."
It has been a non-stop summer for Gayle, who played for Western Australia in the Twenty20 Big Bash competition, but there will be no rest for the opening batsman as the Windies welcome Zimbabwe for a five-match ODI series beginning on March 4, as well as a Twenty20 on February 28.
The 30-year-old admits it's been tough.
"It's been a long summer to be honest with you, for me personally I've been over here about three months and then we leave here and go straight into another series," he said.
"Two days break and then straight into the Zimbabwe series. It's tough ... I try and set the mind to it and just try not to be too negative and try and get the job done out there."
