Smith on road to recovery
Graeme Smith has made a successful return to training after more than a month on the sidelines with a finger injury.
The South Africa captain on Wednesday held a 30-minute session with national bowling coach Vincent Barnes at Newlands as he begins the final leg of his recovery ahead of the ICC World Twenty20 that begins on April 30.
The left-handed opener broke the middle finger of his right hand while playing for his Indian Premier League side, Jaipur, on March 15 - a blow that ruled him out of the tournament and placed in doubt his participation in the global showpiece.
But after practising with Barnes on Wednesday morning, Smith admitted he was "very happy with the way it went."
"We used hard balls throughout and I didn't feel any kind of discomfort," he said.
"My enforced absence from the game has certainly refreshed my enthusiasm for the game and I realised how much I have missed it."
It was his second finger injury of 2010 - the first also suffered in the sub-continent country while on tour with the Proteas - but he admits that he has now fully healed.
He continued: "Both the broken finger injuries I suffered this year in India were the result of fielding, not batting.
"They were pretty freakish and the important thing is that my medical advisers are happy with my condition."
Looking ahead to the 20-over spectacle to be held in West Indies and where South Africa are pooled in Group C alongside Afghanistan and India, Smith added: "We won't have time for a warm-up camp this time as any players involved in the IPL semi-final will have to fly direct from India to the West Indies.
"But this may be no bad thing. You can get over prepared and the guys will have to think on their feet."
