Foo hands Guyana T20 title
The Caribbean T20 final clash between Barbados and Guyana was a thrilling encounter with the latter emerging victorious with one ball and a wicket to spare.
Barbados started their batting on the front-foot with Dale Richards capitalising on some loose deliveries by Guyana off-spinner Cush. Richards was ultimately dismissed by Cush in the third over. Jonathan Carter then came on to the crease only to put in a disappointing performance, hardly a problem for the Guyanese bowlers, similar to the whole battling line-up. Dwayne Smith too crumbled under the pressure and Barbados were left desperate to finish on a high.
Towards the end, it all came down on the shoulders of Jonathan Foo, the 19 year-old Guyanese, who held his nerves and scored out crucial runs to rob Barbados of the title and a place in the upcoming Airtel Champions League Twenty20 in September.
The Barbados spinners, led by Ashley Nurse, were making life difficult for the Guyana batsmen with 59 needed of the last five overs. Matters went from bad to worse as Lennox Cush and Esuan Crandon departed in quick succession. Foo then decided to take things into his own hands and began his onslaught with 50 required off 21 balls.
Probably the most crucial moment of the game occurred when Nurse pitched a full-toss delivery only for Foo to get below it and thrash it towards deep mid-wicket. With the fielder preparing to take the catch, the tables turned on Barbados and he instead helped the ball across the rope for a six.
With an over remaining and eleven runs adrift, Foo smashed Javon Searles for two fours and a single from the fourth ball to make it two runs off two balls. Guyana number 11, Devendra Bishoo then played Searles’ attempted yorker out to mid-wicket for a single and with the Barbados fielder fumbling Foo rushed back for the second to hand Guyana the title at the Queen's Park Oval in West Indies.
