Young duo get Pakistan chance
Rookies, opening batsmen Nasir Jamshed and left-arm medium-pacer Wahab Riaz made the Pakistan squad for the tri nation series
Jamshed, 19, and Riaz, 22, were the only two youngsters to be picked from among several others who had successful tournaments against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh earlier in the year. Promising players such as opening batsman Khalid Latif, fast bowler Sohail Khan and wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed were all kept on the reserve list.Pace bowler Mohammad Asif finds himself in the side despite a mediocre performance with the ball for Delhi Daredevils on return from an elbow injury in the semi-final of the Indian Premier League. However, chief selector Salahuddin Ahmed said the team was picked after he and his colleagues had reviewed fitness reports on all players.
Also picked to the side was Sohail Tanvir, the most successful bowler in the Indian Premier League and the only Pakistani to return from India with some success.
Shoaib Akhtar was not considered as he still fighting an appeal to have a five-year ban for indiscipline overturned by the PCB Appellate tribunal.
Bazid Khan, who made a half-century in his last ODI against Bangladesh, has been retained in the squad as is 33-year-old middle-order batsman Naumanullah.
Pakistan coach Geoff Lawson, who returned from Australia early on Monday, and skipper Shoaib Malik also attended the selection meeting.
The Pakistan Cricket Board may arrange for a brief training camp in Lahore before the team departs for Dhaka on June 5. India is the third team in the series.
