Ashraf's grand plans for Asian cricket

Newly elected Asian Cricket Council chairman Nasim Ashraf revealed he has some very big plans for Asian cricket up his sleeves.

Ashraf said on Sunday that he was keen to secure ODI status for one more Asian country.

"There are several emerging cricket countries in Asia and we would like to see one of them getting ODI status," he told reporters during a press conference after he was elected as the ACC chairman for two years.

"United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Oman have good cricket outfits," he added.

Ashraf reiterated Asia was the cricketing powerhouse of the world. "Our focus is to further strengthen Asian cricket with no political motives."

The new boss of said the ACC would stage next Asia Cup in an associate country: "The next Asia Cup will be decided within next six months."

"That's the agreement in principle," the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chief executive, Syed Ashraful Haq said.

He prioritised strengthening Asian cricket further early in his strength. Ashraf said his mission would be to promote cricket in the continent and specially to help the associate members to develop the game and bridge the gap.

"A budget of US$4.5 million has been approved, which will be used for the development of cricket in smaller associate countries."

Ashraf wants to revive international cricket in UAE as Sharjah, Dubai and Abu Dhabi have international standard cricket stadia.

The veteran Pakistani cricket administrator also promised to use his stint of cricket in the 2012 London Olympics and promote cricket to all corners of the world.

"Cricket is one of the most popular sports in the world and deserves to be in the Olympics."

"We will try our level best to get it included in the London Olympics."

Ashraf felt that cricket has already made a major breakthrough by being included in the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China.

The new ACC boss said the body would ensure the Afro-Asia Cup is held regularly in an effort to keep healthy relations with African nations.
