Selectors set to back experience
The big guns of Indian cricket are all set to travel to Sri Lanka to restore pride in the upcoming bilateral series later this month.
Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar has declared that he his fit and his availability will come as a shot in the arm for the selection committee who meet on Tuesday to pick the team for the three Test series in the emerald isle.
Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman are the others who are expected to form the core of the Test squad along with Tendulkar.
In the bowling department, India may restore the services of offie Harbhajan Singh, who has completed the ban imposed on him for slapping fellow India teammate S Sreesanth during the IPL.
With India having lost 18 of the last 22 finals they have featured in since 1999, the debate for experience over youth has once again cropped up.
India's ODI skipper MS Dhoni, who has vowed to sort out Lankan spinner Ajantha Mendis during the tour, has also done so knowing full well that the Indian Test armoury includes the best in business.
There are more than just a couple of names who played in Bangladesh and Pakistan and are expected to keep their place in the Test side. Opener Gautam Gambhir is expected to be retained alongside statemate Virender Sehwag. The two have been absolutely devastating at the top of the order and the start they provide in Sri Lanka will be crucial to the team's fortunes.
The bowling, which struggled on the placid tracks of Pakistan, is still a cause of concern. India may decide to play two spinners in Anil Kumble and Harbhajan. Ishant Sharma is a sure pick but with Zaheer Khan and S Sreesanth yet to recover from injuries, other places in the pace department will be up for grabs. RP Singh, Munaf Patel and Praveen Kumar are the likely frontrunners.
Dinesh Karthik might also get a look in if the selectors feel it necessary to keep a back up for Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the hot and humid conditions in Sri Lanka.
