ICC may shift Champs Trophy
ICC supremo Haroon Logart vowed to snatch the Champions Trophy away from Pakistan if the security situation remained as volatile.
A deadly suicide blast killed 19 people in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad even as India and Sri Lanka were fighting to lay hands on the Asia Cup in Karachi.
Logart said there would be no compromise after the latest round of violence in the country..
"The ICC will not compromise the safety and security of any individual at one of its tournaments and if it is not appropriate to play in any country then we will not do so," Logart said in a statement.
Players from Australia, New Zealand and England have already expressed concern over touring Pakistan, for the Champions Trophy from September 11-28.
Rawalpindi, one of three venues for the tournament, is in very close proximity with Islamabad where 14 policemen and five civilians lost their lives in Sunday's attack.
Sri Lanka has been asked to be on stand by but the island nation has its own set of problems to deal with. It is confronting a fresh spurt of violence between Tamil Tiger rebels and government troops.
South Africa has been doing the rounds as another alternative.
Logart revealed security had been assessed during the Asia Cup and a basic security arrangement had also been agreed to before the start of the tournament.
"Our consultants on security have been working with the Pakistan authorities during the Asia Cup and will report back to us as soon as possible with their views," he said.
A private security expert, hired by Australia, New Zealand and England has said there was work to be done ahead of the Champions Trophy.
"Some fine-tuning needs to be done and everyone acknowledges that," Reg Dickason said last week.
PCB chairman Nasim Ashraf, who attended the ICC meeting, said he was confident the biennial tournament will be held in Pakistan.
