A look at the stats highlights of the fourth day's play of the first Test between India and Sri Lanka at the SSC in Colombo.

- Sri Lanka's victory by an innings and 239 runs is their biggest ever in Test cricket against a strong opponent.

- Sri Lanka registered their fourth victory (all in Sri Lanka) in 27 Tests against India - Lost 10 and Drawn 13.

- Sri Lanka's triumph by an innings and 239 runs is their biggest victory margin against India, obliterating their win by an innings and 77 runs at Colombo (SSC) in 2001-02.

- At Colombo, SSC, Sri Lanka have won two out of six played against India.

- Sri Lanka, for the first time, have won two successive Tests against India in Sri Lanka - they had won the previous Test, played at Colombo (SSC) in 2001-02 by an innings and 77 runs.

- Overall, Sri Lanka's win by an innings and 239 runs is their third biggest victory-margin in Tests, their top two being by an innings and 254 runs against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo in 2003-04 and by an innings and 240 runs against Zimbabwe at Harare in 2003-04.

- India were asked to follow-on by Sri Lanka for the first time.

- India have enforced a follow-on on Sri Lanka four times, winning all the four Tests by an innings margin - Cuttack, 1986-87, Chandigarh 1990-91, Lucknow 1993-94 and Bangalore 1993-94.

- India conceded a 377-run lead - their second biggest first innings lead to Sri Lanka, next only to the 415-run lead in the 1997-98 Colombo (RPS) Test when Sri Lanka replied with 952/6 in response to India's 537 for eight.

- India's 138 in 45 overs is their lowest ever total against Sri Lanka, eclipsing their 167 in 73.2 overs at Chennai in 2005-06. India's previous lowest in Sri Lanka was 180 in 74.5 overs in the second innings at Galle in 2001-02.

- VVS Laxman (56) posted his highest score against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka, eclipsing his 25 at Colombo, SSC in 1998-99.

- Laxman's aforesaid knock is his third best score against Sri Lanka - his top two being 104 at Ahmedabad in 2005-06 and 69 at Delhi in 2005-06.

- Laxman's second fifty against Sri Lanka is his 34th in Test cricket.

- Laxman has top-scored for India twelve times in an innings in Test cricket. Sachin Tendulkar holds the world record for top-scoring in an innings 41 times.

- Laxman has recorded 50s in successive innings. In his previous Test innings against South Africa at Kanpur in 2007-08, he had made 50.

- With five wickets (or more) in each innings of the just concluded Test, Muttiah Muralitharan has now claimed five wickets in an innings 65 times - six times against India.

- Muralitharan's 14 five-wicket hauls at Colombo, SSC is a record by any bowler at one venue. Muralitharan's 160 wickets at Colombo, SSC at 20.49 runs apiece in 23 Tests (at the end of the first innings) is a new record by a bowler at any one venue.

- Muralitharan, for the first time against India, has bagged five wickets or more in both innings of the Test - 5/84 + 6/26.

- Muralitharan's match figures of 11 for 110 are his best in a Test match against India, obliterating the 11 for 196 (8/87 + 3/109) in the 2001-02 Colombo, SSC Test.

- Laxman and Ishant Sharma put on 35 runs - India's best partnership for the tenth wicket in Sri Lanka, bettering the 30 between Zaheer Khan and Venkatesh Prasad at Colombo, SSC in 2001-02.

- India's all-time best for the tenth-wicket stand against Sri Lanka is 69 (unbroken) between Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh at Ahmedabad in 2005-06.

- Laxman-Ishant pair recorded the longest partnership and became the first pair to face 100 balls (108) in Indian innings of 223. Sachin Tendulkar-Sourav Ganguly had faced 82 balls for their 44-run stand for the fourth wicket.

- Ishant (13 not out), in six successive innings, has remained unbeaten. His Test batting average is 35.00 - 70 runs in nine innings (seven times not out) with a highest of 23 in seven Tests.

- Ishant (54 balls), for the first time in his Test career, has faced 50 balls or more in a Test innings. He had faced 48 balls for his unbeaten 14 against Australia at Adelaide in 2007-08.

- Ishant now holds a record for facing most balls (54) as number eleven batsman for India against Sri Lanka, bettering Harbhajan Singh's 40 not out off 51 balls at Ahmedabad in 2005-06.

- Laxman (56 & 21) became the first Indian batsman to be dismissed twice on the same day against Sri Lanka - Mendis captured his wicket in both the innings.

- Laxman is the 15th Indian batsman to be dismissed to the same bowler (Ajantha Mendis) twice on the same day of a Test match.

- Manoj Prabhakar was the last Indian batsman to be dismissed twice to the same bowler on the same day of a Test match - vs New Zealand at Christchurch in 1989-90 - Martin Snedden being the bowler.

- Gautam Gambhir (43) posted his highest score against Sri Lanka, bettering his 39 in the first innings.

- Ajantha Mendis' figures of 8 for 132 (4/72 + 4/60) are the best by any Sri Lankan bowler on Test debut, surpassing A K Kuruppurachchi's 7 for 85 against Pakistan at Colombo in 1985-86.

- Muralitharan got his 19th Man of the Match award. Only South Africa's Jacques Kallis has got more MOM awards (20) in Test Cricket. Wasim Akram and Shane Warne share the third place with 17 MOM awards.
