Ishant rested for ODI's
Fast bowler Ishant Sharma has been rested for the five match ODI series against Sri Lanka, with Munaf Patel getting a call-up.
The selectors named a 16-member squad for the ODIs. However, star pacer Ishant has been rested for the ODI's in Sri Lanka with a view to keep him fresh for the top teams in the Champions Trophy in Pakistan in September.
It is a wise decision by the BCCI to prevent the team's strike bowler from burn out on the batting friendly Sri Lankan tracks. Munaf has been roped in instead.
Robin Uthappa, who fared miserably in the Kitply Cup as well as the STAR Cricket Asia Cup has been dumped in the cold and substituted by India u-19 captain Virat Kohli.
MS Dhoni, who decided to opt out of the ongoing Test series due to fatigue returned to captain India for the ODI's in Sri Lanka and the Champions Trophy in Pakistan from September.
Harbhajan also returned to the folds after serving a five match ban for slapping S Sreesanth during the IPL three months back. Struggling leg spinner Piyush Chawla. consequently misses out.
Kohli, who was remarkably sonsistently during the recently concluded Emerging Players Tournament in Australia was justly rewarded, which meant the likes of S Badrinath and Manoj Tiwary had to miss out.
India would also be boosted by the return of Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina, who were not considered for the Tests in Sri Lanka.
With Tendulkar returning to the side, there will be three specialist openers in the squad. Virender Sehwag was partnered by Gautam Gambhir in Tendulkar's absence from the Kitply Cup and the STAR Cricket Asia Cup.
The pace attack would definitely be a lot more probing with Zaheer back in the team. Munaf has looked dangerous for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL and there has been a huge change in his lackadaisical attitude, for which he drew flak from former players.
The BCCI also named a 15-man squad for the Champions Trophy. Ishant will replace Munaf while Parthiv Patel, who features in the squad for Sri Lanka will not fly to Pakistan.
Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid, as widely expected were not even considered for the ODIs after they failed to make it even to the Champions Trophy probables.
The BCCI issued a statement saying that S. Sreesanth would have to prove his match-fitness by playing domestic cricket, before being considered for selection.
