Patel handed England debut

All-rounder Samit Patel was handed his debut as England made changes for the inaugural one-day international against Scotland at the Grange.

The Nottinghamshire all-rounder was named in a new-look England line-up, which also included three recalls as the selectors considered their options for Wednesday's Twenty20 international at Chester-le-Street.

Left-arm spinner Patel replaced Graeme Swann as England's slow-bowling option, while Sussex wicketkeeper Matt Prior was recalled at the top of the order. Lancashire all-rounder Andrew Flintoff, playing his first ODI since facing India at Lord's last summer, and Yorkshire's Tim Bresnan were also included.

Scotland named a line-up featuring several players with county experience, including Durham's Kyle Coetzer, Warwickshire's Nav Poonia and former Yorkshire pair John Blain and Gavin Hamilton.

England captain Kevin Pietersen won the toss and decided to bowl first, but the heavy rain which had been forecast arrived shortly after, sending groundstaff at the Grange scurrying to get the covers onto the wicket.
