Masters haunts Leicestershire

In Division Two, Leicestershire suffered a nightmare first day against Essex at Grace Road after they were bowled out for only 107.

HD Ackerman was unbeaten on 55 but the rest of the Foxes line-up failed to even make double figures as David Masters took five wickets against his former county for the second time this season.

Masters claimed five for 35 and received support from Dutch all-rounder Ryan ten Doeschate (four for 16) as the home side's batting crumbled.

Essex had been in trouble when they were reduced to 33 for three after Nadeem Malik took two early wickets but skipper Mark Pettini (58), wicketkeeper James Foster (28no) and Jaik Mickleburgh (27no) helped them to 144 for four at stumps.

Johan van der Wath helped Northamptonshire restrict Glamorgan to 286 for nine before bad light brought a premature end to play at Wantage Road.

The South African finished the day with four for 55 with England spinner Monty Panesar (two for 62) also among the wickets, while Mark Wallace (72) and Gareth Rees (53) performed with the bat for the Welsh county.

Elsewhere, Warwickshire progressed to 209 for three against Derbyshire at Edgbaston thanks to an impressive 73 from skipper Darren Maddy.

Jonathan Trott (62no) and Jim Troughton (22no) are both unbeaten for the Bears and will continue when play resumes on day two.
