Pakistan have named former captain Intikhab Alam as successor to Geoff Lawson in the role of head coach.

Intikhab will lead the side on their trip to Abu Dhabi to face West Indies in November, when they will play three one-day internationals and possibly two Tests as well.

"We have appointed Intikhab as the coach and he will accompany the team to Abu Dhabi for the three one-day internationals against the West Indies," said Butt.

"We would like to appoint Alam for a two-year contract, but the final decision will be announced after we take the approval of (PCB's) governing board members."

Intikhab, 66, was manager when Pakistan won the 1992 World Cup and excelled as a player, taking part in 47 Tests until his retirement in 1975, leading them on 17 occasions.
