Ranji Trophy - Brief updates

Here is a brief round-up of the various Ranji Trophy matches currently being played in different parts of the country.

Haryana vs Madhya Pradesh at Indore

Haryana skipper Sunny Singh scored a hurricane 312 in 333 balls as the visitors piled up 546 runs on the second day of the Ranji Trophy plate division Group B match against Madhya Pradesh at the Emerald Heights International School ground.

Sunny, who resumed his innings at 146, never allowed the MP bowlers to settle and blasted them to all parts of the ground at regular intervals.

He went on to add another 166 runs today to end up with his career's highest score. His knock was studded with 44 boundaries and seven huge sixes.

Sunny was the last man out when he went for yet another big hit and was stumped by wicketkeeper Naman Ojha off the bowling of Abbas Ali.

Ali (2-31), Sanjay Pandey (2-122), T Sudhindra (2-114) and Anand Rajan (3-85) were the main wicket takers for hosts.

In reply, the hosts scored 116 runs losing the wicket of Ojha for 31.

Skipper Hrishesh Kanitkar (26) and deputy Jalaj Saxena (43) were at the crease when stumps were drawn for the day.

Goa vs Vidarbha at Nagpur

Centuries from Test discard Ajay Ratra (121) and Saurabh Bandekar (100) put Goa on the driver's seat as they ammassed a mammoth 476 all out off 149.5 overs against Vidarbha on second day of Ranji Trophy plate Group A match at VCA Jamtha stadium.

Vidarbha in reply lost two early wickets and were 113 for two by close of play. Amit Paunikar (47 not out) and Salabah Srivastav (31 not out) were in the process of resurrecting the home team innings.

Earlier, the overnight pair of Ratra and Bandekar, who added 176 runs for the sixth wicket, played some lively cricket to put the visitors in commanding position.

After Ratra's departure, Bandekar consolidated the visitors' innings in company of lower-order batsmen. The home team bowlers struggled through the early part of the day as they lacked bite and penetration on an easy-paced wicket.

Only leg spinner Azhar Sheikh (4 for 71) showed some skill in inviting the batsman towards stroke making and succeeded.

Tail ender Amit Yadav (39 not out) played a cameo knock to swell the visitors' total. The home team have their task cut out on the third day to chase the huge total more so having lost the all important wicket of skipper Alind Naidu (0).

Himachal vs Hyderabad at Hyderabad

Unbeaten half centuries from Paras Dogra and Ajay Mannu helped Himachal Pradesh reach 166 for three at stumps on the second day of the Ranji Trophy Super League Group A match.

Dogra was unbeaten on 54 while giving him company at the crease was Mannu on 52 as the duo played cautiously after the fall of three wickets to amass the runs in 59 overs.

For Hyderabad, Alfred Absolem picked up two wickets for 48 runs while out-of-favour India left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha scalped one victim giving away 38 runs.

Earlier, starting at the overnight score of 237 for six, the last four Hyderabad batsmen added 91 runs in 28.3 overs to take their score beyond 300.

However, the day started on a bad note for Hyderabad as Abhinav Kumar could only add three runs to his overnight score of 70.

But Hyderabad's cause was helped by Munagala Praneet Arjun's gutsy 71 and some indicipline bowling from Himachal bowlers, who gave away 39 run extras.

Vikramjeet Malik shone with the ball for Himachal with figures of four for 67. He was ably supported by Ashok Thakur at the other end, picking up two wickets for 71 runs.

Gujarat vs Orissa at Ahmedabad

Hosts Gujarat bowled out Orissa for a paltry 192 runs to earn a vital first innings lead of 78 on the second day of the Ranji Trophy Group B encounter at the Sardar Patel stadium.

The visitors were bundled out in just 70.5 overs. Niranjan Behera top-scored with 78 runs of 195 deliveries, while B S Pati and Rakesh Mohanty contributed 24 and 34 runs respectively.

Skipper S S Das and Parvanjan Mallik were shown the pavillion door before they could open their account, while three others failed to reach double figures.

Gujarat bowlers S K Trivedi, M A Makda and M S Patel accounted for two wickets each, while Salil Yadav, T K Patel and Rajul Bhatt shared a wicket apiece.

In reply, Gujarat were four for no loss when stumps were drawn for the day.

Earlier, the hosts resuming the day at 237 for seven and could only muster 33 more runs before their innings folded for 270.

Maharasthra vs Bengal at Pune

Riding on Abhishek Jhunjhunwala's 95 and Manoj Tiwary's 88, Bengal piled up 325 runs in their first innings in reply to Maharsahtra's 179 at the end of second day's play in their four-day Super League Group B Ranji Trophy match.

Maharshtra, in their second essay, were 46 for no loss with Harshad Khadiwale batting on 24 and Rohan Bhosale on 15, thereby trailing Bengal by 100 runs.

Earlier, starting at the overnight score of 52 for two, Tiwari notched up vital partnerships with Wriddhiman Saha (26), Rohan Gavaskar (23), Laxmi Ratan Shukla (24) and Jhunjhunwala's to guide Bengal to 325.

Tiwary finnaly fell to pacer Sajin Sureshnath, edging one to wicketkeeper Rohit Motwani with Bengal scoreboard reading 221 for six. He struck 13 fours and two sixes during his 174 ball stay at the crease.

Jhunjhunwala then took over from where Tiway and made a 122-ball 95 to see Bengal cross the 300-run mark before he became the last batsman to depart, caught by Ameya Shrikhande off Kiran Ramling Adhav. He hit 13 fours and a lone six.

For Maharashtra Samad Fallah was the pick of the bowlers, scalping four wickets for 102 runs, while Sureshnath and Azhar Ansari got two victims each.

Delhi vs Baroda at Vadodara

Shikhar Dhawan (224) cracked his maiden first-class double-century as Delhi piled on a huge 591 all out against a weakened Baroda attack on the second day of their Ranji Trophy Super League Group B match here today.

Already missing captain Irfan Pathan, Baroda had to play without the services of Salim Veragi, their opening bowler who was called twice for a suspect action.

To add to the woes of Baroda, all the Delhi top-order batsmen except captain Aakash Chopra (21) scored half centuries. Gaurav Chabbra (65), Rajat Bhatia (78), Mayank Tehlan (55) and Yogesh Nagar (55) made merry of the ineffective Baroda bowling to take the score to 591 all out from 168.4 overs.

Delhi scored runs at a brisk pace, adding another 294 runs from 78.4 overs today to their overnight 297 for two.

Resuming on his overnight 122, Dhawan shared two fruitful partnerships with Mayank Tehlan (119 for fourth wicket) and Yogesh Nagar (73 for fifth wicket) after the other overnight batsman Bhatia fell early in just the second over of the morning. Bhatia added just eight runs to his overnight 70.

Dhawan finally fell with the Delhi total at 500. His 224 included 23 fours and two sixes. Delhi lost the next five wickets for 91 runs.

Mumbai vs Punjab at Chandigarh

Sahil Kukreja's 90 and Abhishek Nayar's fluent 53 helped Mumbai reach 244 for the loss of seven wickets against Punjab on the second day of the Ranji Trophy Super League Group A match.

Earlier, starting at the overnight score of 242 for nine, Punjab's last wicket could add just 17 runs as they were bowled out for 259.

Mumbai too got off to a disastrous start to their innings, losing the first three wickets cheaply with the scoreboard reading 65.

However, Kukreja and Nayar stitched together a valuable 115 runs for the fourth wicket to stabilise the Mumbai innings.

Kukreja struck 14 hits to the fence en route his 90 before being held up by wicketkeeper Uday Kaul of the bowling of Love Ablish.

Nayar soon followed suit, caught behind by Kaul off Manpreet Gony.

Nayar's 138 minute stay at the crease was studded with eight fours.

Ablish was the chief destroyer of Mumbai innings, claiming four wickets, while Gony took two wickets and Harmeet Singh scalped one victim.

Mumbai pacer Ajit Agarkar, who claimed four wickets, failed to excel with the bat as he could manage just 11.

At draw of stumps, Romesh Powar was not out on 10 and giving him company was O Khanvilkar on 16.
