Ranji Trophy- Brief previews

Defending champions Mumbai will take on laggards Railways in their fourth Group A match of the Ranji Trophy Super League.

Mumbai are high on confidence after a dramatic come-from-behind win in their last match.

Mumbai is currently joint second in their group with nine points, while Railways lie third from the bottom among eight teams with just three points.

The morale-boosting 85-run win over Himachal Pradesh at home on Friday has rejuvenated Mumbai, who drew its opening two matches against Punjab and Orissa.

The opening game against Punjab was a draw but Mumbai managed to notch up the all-important three bonus points on the basis of their first innings lead.

Mumbai, playing without a few top players due to national duty, were then done in by unseasonal rains, which washed out two days of play in their second match against unfancied Orissa at home.

The Wasim Jaffer-led side could not gain bonus point as they failed to force a first innings lead from the two days play was possible.

Mumbai, however, bounced back strongly to beat Himachal Pradesh after fighting through a first innings batting collapse.

Discarded India pacer Ajit Agarkar was the surprise hero with the bat as he slammed a hundred to ensure that Mumbai more than made up for the first innings collapse.

Railways, however, have had to be content with the three draws so far, none of which have fetched them any bonus points either.

Their last game against Orissa at Bhubaneswar was rain-marred. They batted painfully slow in whatever play that was possible with V Cheluvraj taking 282 balls to make 88 runs in the first innings.

With rain playing spoilsport, the bowlers didn't get much of a game against Orissa.

Saurashtra vs Bengal at Kolkata

Bolstered with the presence of former India captain Sourav Ganguly, Bengal will take on a resurgent Saurashtra in their Ranji Trophy Super League Group B encounter, commencing at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Tuesday.

Having started off with an outright win over Maharashtra, Bengal failed to take even a first innings lead in their next two matches against Baroda and Karnataka, as their batting order lacked consistency.

Bengal further got mired in off-the-field controversy when senior pro Deep Dasgupta was overlooked and the captaincy baton was handed to Manoj Tiwary after injured regular skipper Laxmi Ratan Shukla pulled out from the Karnataka match.

However, Bengal cricket chief Jagmohan Dalmiya stepped in to resolve the problem and held discussion with the former ICL cricketers, including Dasgupta, who reportedly wanted to snap ties with the state after the snub.

Dasgupta agreed to stay on but the big question mark over captaincy remained unresolved even on the eve of the match.

The Cricket Association of India (CAB) today announced Tiwary as the vice-captain for the rest of the season, following a long meeting headed by Dalmiya.

Tiwary would be the leader for the hosts tomorrow after Shukla, suffering from a hamstring pull, failed to clear the fitness test.

Delhi vs UP at Lucknow

Less than impressive in their last two outings, a depleted Delhi would look to register their first win and keep their Ranji Trophy Super League campaign on track when they take on Uttar Pradesh in a Group B match.

Delhi, playing without captain Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag and Ishant Sharma, have so far notched up only two draws and collected just four points.

In their first match against Baroda, the Aakash Chopra-led side scored an imposing 591 in their first innings riding on a double century from Shikhar Dhawan.

Their bowlers, however, failed to force a win with Baroda escaping with a draw after following on. Delhi felt the absence of pacer Ashish Nehra, who returned to one-day cricket with a bang recently after an injury lay-off.

In their second match at home against Karnataka, they missed Sehwag and Gambhir, when they were bundled out for 154 inside two sessions before scoring 277 all out in the second innings -- again made possible by Dhawan (100).

They escaped from the jaws of defeat with bad light denying Karnataka a win with just 23 runs required from 19 overs in a chase of 172, on Friday.

Except for Dhawan and Rajat Bhatia, most of the Delhi batsmen have been struggling with captain Chopra completely out of sorts. If Delhi have to win here, Chopra will have to fire.

Right-arm pacer Sumit Narwal has been the pick of the Delhi bowlers having bagged 12 wickets from the two matches.

Uttar Pradesh are no better either having collected six points from two draws and a loss from three matches.

They suffered a huge 185-run loss to Karnataka in Meerut in their first match before drawing against Suarashtra and Baroda.

The Mohammad Kaif-led side collected three points from the drawn match against Baroda on the basis of their first innings lead but could gather just one from the rain-marred game against Suarashtra at Ghaziabad.

Except for Shivakant Shukla and Parvinder Singh, who have a century each to their name, none of the Uttar Pradesh top order batsmen have come good.

Captain Kaif has been out of form, scoring just one half century so far.
