Broad breakthrough at Trent Bridge
Stuart Broad overcame the disappointment of being dropped from the England squad by taking a wicket to give LV County Championship Division One leaders Nottinghamshire the upper hand in their clash against Durham.
The seamer induced an edge from Ben Harmison to Chris Read in his third over to leave Durham struggling on 143 for five at Trent Bridge.
Durham ended the afternoon session on 200 for six thanks to an impressive performance from Will Smith, who added 49 to the 32 he had scored by lunch to go in at tea on 81 not out.
Michael Carberry and Michael Lumb both passed 50 as Hampshire looked set to post a big total against Kent at Canterbury.
Yasir Arafat looked to have the visitors in trouble in the morning session after the Pakistani all-rounder took the wickets of Sean Ervine (nought) and Michael Brown (six), but Hampshire - currently eighth in Division One - recovered from 20 for two to reach 223 for four at tea thanks to Carberry (92) and Lumb (73).
Somerset's veteran seamer Andy Caddick claimed the prize scalp of Sussex's Michael Yardy, but an unbeaten 76 from Murray Goodwin left the hosts in a strong position on 247 for four at tea.
Charl Willoughby snared the wicket of Matt Prior to add to the wickets of Chris Nash (six) and Luke Wright (22) that he had taken in the first session to reach tea with impressive figures of three for 71.
Deon Kruis and Tim Bresnan ripped through the Surrey top order to give Yorkshire the advantage in a rain-affected match at Headingley.
Kruis made up for the time lost in the morning session by dismissing Mark Ramprakash (six), Usman Afzaal (one), and Jonathan Batty for a duck.
Bresnan removed Stewart Walters for 40 and also trapped Scott Newman lbw for 29 to leave the visitors on 110 for five at tea.
