Pattinson bounces back

Darren Pattinson bowled impressively to help Nottinghamshire claim the upper hand after the first day of their LV County Championship Division One clash with Somerset at Taunton.

The 30-year-old seamer, who was controversially included in the England side which suffered a 1-wicket defeat to South Africa in the second Test at Headingley, finished with five for 40 off 13.1 overs as Somerset were dismissed for 106.

Pattinson's victims included former England opener Marcus Trescothick and all-rounder Ian Blackwell - both for one - as well as Zander de Bruyn (nine), Andrew Caddick (seven) and Charl Willoughby (seven).

Pattinson received support from Andre Adams (four for 39) as only four Somerset players made double figures, with Steffan Jones (27 not out) leading the way for the home side.

Nottinghamshire lost opener Matthew Wood for a duck but Bilal Shafayat (25) and Mark Wagh (46) steadied the ship before they fell to Peter Trego - who finished the day with three for 36.

Samit Patel, who was included in England's one-day squad, contributed 56 before he was trapped lbw by Alfonso Thomas. Mark Ealham, who is unbeaten on nought, will resume with captain Chris Read (33no) on day two after taking the league leaders to 185 for six at the close.

The wickets also tumbled at Chester-le-Street as Kent dismissed Durham for 146 with veteran Martin Saggers the pick of the bowlers with four for 26. Robbie Joseph and Amjad Khan both claimed three wickets each as Michael Di Venuto, Mark Stoneman, Will Smith and Liam Plunkett all got into the twenties but were unable to push on.

Kent reached 43 for five at the close with only opener Joe Denly (21) able to make much of an impression as Mark Davies claimed three for seven off five overs.

Sussex paceman Ollie Rayner took five for 65 as Lancashire were skittled for 206 on a damp day at Old Trafford. Jason Lewry set the tone after he removed three top-order wickets and despite some resistance from Steven Croft (46) and Luke Sutton (45no) Rayner ensured Sussex - who finished on nine without loss - enjoyed the best of the day.

Jacques Rudolph hit an unbeaten 83 to help Yorkshire recover from the loss of early wickets to reach 206 for seven against Hampshire at the Rose Bowl. Gerard Brophy chipped in with a valuable 36 as Dimitri Mascarenhas (two for 23) and James Tomlinson (three for 39) enjoyed the best of bowler-friendly conditions.
