PCB to be made more accountable

A high powered standing committee of the Senate on sports wants the PCB to be made more accountable to the Ministry of Sports.

The committee is miffed with the way the PCB has been functioning.

In its recommendations, the senate committee said a legislation must be brought to make the PCB more accountable.

The committee has finalised recommendations which have to be approved by the Prime Minister to be implemented. It has also called for the heads of the national hockey and squash federations to be removed.

Pakistan have remained world champions in both sports and the committee wants hockey chief Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali and Squash Federation head Tanvir Ahmed to be replaced by professionals.

Committee member Senator Enver Baig said the purpose of finalising the recommendations was to improve and streamline the functioning of sports bodies in Pakistan and make them more accountable particularly the cricket board.

"The cricket boards needs to be answerable to the sports ministry and PSB," Baig said.

But interestingly, the Senate committee also feels that government interference in the affairs of sports institutions and federations might result in complications.

The Senate committee's reports comes just as the sports ministry has made an amendment in the PCB constitution and issued a notification allowing it to monitor the day to day operations of the board.
