Butt gives Malik more say in selection

PCB chairman Ejaz Butt has assured Pakistan skipper Shoaib Malik that he would have more say in team selection.

Malik, during his meeting with Butt, complained about how the selectors had ignored his views while finalising teams in the last two years.

Former PCB chairman Dr Nasim Ashraf had laid down a selection policy where the paid committee had the final say in finalising the squad.

"I have been assured that the team will now be announced after consultations with the captain. The selection committee will convince the captain before naming the team, unlike the way it used to happen previously," Malik said after meeting Butt.

The captain and coach were consulted but they did not have any say in the matter and were only given authority in finalising the playing elevens on foreign tours along with the team manager.

Sources said Butt met Malik in the presence of new chief selector Saleem Jaffer and the captain voiced his complaint over being ignored in selection matters.

"Yes he conveyed he was not happy over this arrangement to Butt who told Jaffer that from now on the captain must be given final say as he is the one who leads the team on the field," one source told PTI.

Malik said he had discussed future plans for Pakistan cricket with Butt and got a patient hearing.

"I am happy that the Chairman listened to my point of view and the problems I face. He also made it clear there will be no compromise at all on discipline in selecting the team," Malik added.
