Young shines but Pak dominate

Wicketkeeper Reece Young struck a half-century as the New Zealand Invitational XI were all out for 234 on the opening day of the three-day warm-up match against Pakistan.

By the close at the Queenstown Events Centre, Pakistan had faced nine overs and reached 14 for one with Tim Southee getting the early breakthrough, trapping opener Khurram Manzoor leg before wicket for one.

Earlier, New Zealand Test candidates Daniel Flynn and James Franklin fell just short of their fifties as Pakistan dominated the only game ahead of the first Test which starts in Dunedin on Tuesday.

Openers Craig Cumming (two) and Tim McIntosh (14) went cheaply. Cumming was the first of Abdur Rauf's four wickets, while Yasir Arafat bowled McIntosh.

Leg spinner Danish Kaneria then trapped BJ Watling (11) lbw and removed captain Grant Elliott in identical fashion for three as New Zealand struggled to 73 for four at lunch despite Pakistan missing three first-choice bowlers.

But Flynn stood firm occupying the crease from the fourth over to the 40th to make a 102-ball 49 before finally being caught by Imran Farhat in Rauf's second spell.

Franklin fell seven runs short of his half-century and it was left to Young, who hit seven boundaries and a six in his 105-ball 75, to take Zealand to 160 for seven by tea.

Young's dismissal in the 74th over - caught by Mohammad Yousuf off Rauf - brought New Zealand's innings to a close, leaving Iain O'Brien unbeaten on 13.

Rauf finished with figures of four for 43 off 14.1 overs, while Arafat, Kaneria and Mohammad Asif each grabbed two wickets apiece.

Pakistan's reply got off to a shaky start with Manzoor facing 22 balls for his solitary run before Southee struck.

Farhat and Fawad Alam will resume on Thursday on 10 and nought respectively.
