Asif's past controversies
Pakistan bowler Mohammad Asif has been detained at Dubai International Airport after a powder was found in his wallet.
Here is a glance at the incidents which have marred the career of one the most talented bowlers in world cricket.
NANDROLONE
In 2006, both Asif and Shoaib Akhtar were both found to have taken the banned steroid Nandrolone after failing internal PCB drug tests. The PCB handed the players bans of one and two years respectively, which were overturned on appeal. The World Anti-Doping Agency, backed by the ICC, challenged the tribunal's decision, taking the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. CAS eventually dropped the case in July 2007 "with some considerable regret", after ruling it had no jurisdiction. CAS found the PCB did not offer a right to appeal in their rules and the ICC did not require them to do so.
SHOAIB
Before the 2007 World Twenty20 tournament, Asif was involved in a dressing-room altercation, during which he was struck with a bat by Shoaib. Shoaib was sent home from South Africa and removed from Pakistan's squad, but Asif remained for the tournament, in which Pakistan were beaten by India in the final.
DETENTION
In June 2008, Asif was detained by authorities in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, after a powder was found in his wallet as he travelled home to Pakistan after playing in the Indian Premier League. PCB human resources manager Nadeem Akram was flown to Dubai to liaise with embassy officials, telling officials the substance had been given to Asif by a doctor.
