Asif detention drama continues

Confusion prevailed over the detention of Pakistan pacer Asif who was held with alleged contraband drugs at Dubai on Sunday.

According to reports in the Pakistani media, including the Dawn, the Pakistan Ambassador to the UAE Ahsan Ullah Khan had earlier said that all charges had been dropped against Asif and he would make his way home on the first available flight.

Conflicting reports, now coming out of Dubai, say that Asif will stay in detention for another three or four days till results of his urine tests are received.

Pakistan Cricket Board media manager Raza Rashid told PA Sport that the PCB was still awaiting results of a urine test carried out on Asif as well as results of the laboratory test of the substance found in his possession.

"We should get those results anytime now," said Rashid.

"The UAE authorities will decide whether to press charges or to release Asif only after the results of the tests are known."

The Ambassador's office has denied the reports and so have the PCB. In fact, the Ambassador was quoted as saying that there was no question of dropping any charges against Asif as the same had never been framed.

Even though the PCB is backing the player and has sent a legal team to sort out the situation, there is expected to be a delay in the entire process as there has been a death in the UAE royal family and all government offices will remain closed for a couple of days for national mourning.

Asif was detained at the Dubai international airport on Sunday on his way back from India after playing in the IPL after an alleged contraband substance was found in his wallet.

The Pakistan pacer, who was on Monday selected for the upcoming tri-series in Bangladesh, has also been dropped from the 14-member squad. He has been replaced by Sohail Khan.

The PCB has not given any reason dropping him, but it seems with the detention story bound to drag on for some more time, Asif may not be able to take the flight out to Dhaka with his teammates as per schedule.
