PCB to Oz: Learn from Lawson

The PCB has asked Australian players to take a leaf out of Pakistan Coach Geoff Lawson's book and not boycott the Champions Trophy.

Australia have cited security concerns and have indicated that they may not defend their Champions Trophy title in Pakistan. They had earlier postponed their tour to that country this March.

The Pakistan Cricket Board has now told the Aussie players to learn from countrymate Lawson who has been living in Lahore for more than a year now.

"I think they should take a leaf out of Lawson's book. If terrorists had a point to prove, they could have targeted him or his Australian staff. But this hasn't been the situation, and I don't think sports terrorism is on the list," PCB COO Shafqat Naghmi was quoted as saying.

"Australians know they are a close ally of the US, but this is not a perception that is very widespread in Pakistan or amongst religious extremists. We have not received any intelligence so far that would indicate a higher threat against Australia or England in this respect," he added.

Naghmi also said that the Pakistanis are "very disappointed" with the Australian side and another refusal from the World Champions to play in Pakistan would further distance them from the public as many believe the team has "overblown" the security issue.

"The fans are very disappointed that Australia has not been here for 10 years. There is a feeling among them that a lot of the security concerns have been blown out of proportion. That's not to say there is hostility towards them, just disappointment and a little frustration," he said.
