Asif wants 'B' sample tested

Pakistan’s Mohammad Asif, who tested positive for a banned substance during the IPL, has asked for his 'B' sample to be tested.

The paceman, who was already under investigation by the Pakistan Cricket Board after being detained at the Dubai International Airport last month on suspicion of carrying drugs, failed a dope test during the semi-finals of the Indian Premier League.

IPL commissioner Lalit Modi and chief executive officer Sundar Raman on Monday confirmed that a sample provided by Asif had returned an "Adverse Analytical Finding".

And Asif's lawyer, Shahid Karim, has confirmed the player also wants his 'B' sample tested.

"We will fight the case because we believe that our client has not taken any drug," Karim said on Zee TV.

"We will ask for the 'B' sample to be tested and do whatever is required to clear Asif`s name."

The PCB are likely to take a tough line considering this is Asif's third instance of involvement with drugs.

Asif also tested positive for the performance enhancing substance nandrolone in 2006, but had a two-year ban reduced to a year on appeal.

Last month, he was detained in Dubai for almost three weeks after a powder was found in his wallet while he was travelling back to Pakistan.

The charges of carrying drugs was later dropped and Asif was deported home.

The positive test in the IPL leaves Asif facing the possibility of a life ban, but his lawyer is hoping the bowler will be cleared.

"Asif is a talented bowler and wants to play for his country," Karim continued.

"He is confident that he will get out of this trouble and play again for the country."

Asif and a representative can be present when the 'B' sample is tested at the World Anti-Doping Agency laboratory in Switzerland.

A representative of the IPL will also be present.

If the 'B' sample also tests positive, Asif would face a minimum ban of two years.
