Ranji Trophy- Brief updates
Here is a brief round-up of some of the Ranji Trophy matches being currently played in various parts of India.
Jharkhand vs Tripura at Ranchi
Skipper Saurav Tiwary's century and his 162-run fourth wicket partnership with Rajiv Kumar (75) put Jharkhand in the driver's seat on the first day of the four-day Plate Group 'A' Ranji Trophy tie against Tripura at Mecon Stadium here.
At the draw of stumps, the hosts were at 299 for five in their first innings with Shiv Gautam (12) and Shahbaz Nadeem (10) at the crease.
After suffering initial jolts when the team was reduced to 22 for two, Tiwari (136) joined Ishank Jaggi (31) and the two put on 92 valuable runs for the third wicket.
After the dismissal of Jaggi, Tiwari and Kumar toyed with the Tripura bowlers till offie Jayant Debnath clean bowled Tiwari and Kumar followed suit, being run out.
Tiwari struck 15 boundaries in his chanceless ton.
Goa vs Vidharba at Nagpur
A fighting unbeaten 84 by former international stumper Ajay Ratra and useful contributions from skipper Sridhar Sriram and Regan Pinto enabled Goa to reach 286 for five at close of play on the opening day of their Ranji Trophy Plate Group tie against Vidarbha today.
Sriram (50) and Pinto (46) helped the visitors to recover after a slump at the Jamtha Stadium near here.
Making first use of the wicket, the young Goa side lost opener S Kamat (1) lbw to Alind Naidu. The visitors partially recovered through other opener Anup Kolambkar (38) and Sriram before the latter also fell to rival skipper Naidu.
Kolambkar later shared a 76-run stand for the third wicket with Pinto before being run out. Test discard Ratra, after a cautious start, held the innings together and saw the exit of Pinto and Rahul Kenni (20) with Goa at 213 for five.
However, an unbroken sixth wicket stand of 73 between Ratra and Saurabh Bandekar (30) stabilised Goa's innings.
Ratra struck a dozen hits to the fence and looked in control. His innings could be crucial factor for Goa.
For Vidarbha, Naidu (2 for 44) began well but failed to drive home the early advantage as the spinners lacked the bite on the decent batting track.
Brief scores: Goa 1st innings: 286 for 5 off 90 overs (Ajay Ratra batting 84, Sridhar Sriram 50, Saurabh Bandekar batting 30; Alind Naidu 2 for 44).
Haryana vs Madhya Pradesh at Indore
A brilliant unbeaten 146 by skipper Sunny Singh and a cautious 71 by Rahul Diwan helped Haryana score 308 for 5 against Madhya Pradesh at the end of day one in their Ranji Trophy Plate Group B match.
Madhya Pradesh skipper Hrishikesh Kanitkar won the toss and put Haryana to bat at Emerald Heights International School grounds.
Rahul Divan and Ankit Rawat added 70 runs for the first wicket. Anand Rajan gave the first break to the hosts packing off Rawat at his individual score of 28.
Diwan and Singh batted brilliantly afterwards and gave strength to the visiting team.
Both the batsmen took the score to 143, when T Sudhindra cleanbowled Diwan for a well made 71. At the other end, however, the skipper was going strong.
At 152, Rajan sent Nitin Saini back to pavilion before he could open his account. He then bowled a beauty to trap Sachin Rana (1) in front of the wicket.
Sumit Sharma gave good support to his skipper and made 45 before being caught and bowled by debutant Shridhar Iyer to give him his first Ranji wicket.
The Haryana skipper was going strong at his individual score 146 with 24 hits to the fence.
For Madhya Pradesh, Rajan scalped three wickets for 55 in 17 overs.
Railways vs Tamil Nadu at New Delhi
Sanjay Bangar struck an unbeaten 111 to take Railways to a strong position at 242 for four on the opening day of their Ranji Trophy Super League Group A match against Tamil Nadu.
Coming at number three, Bangar proved his captain Murali Kartik's decision to bat first at the Karnail Singh Stadium right as he stitched two important partnerships - 80 with opener Faiz Fazal and 76 with Yere Goud - to give Railways the advantage.
Fazal was the other main contributor with 70, which he made from 164 balls with the help of 11 fours before he fell to Ravichandran Ashwin at the post-lunch session.
When stumps were drawn, Sanjib Sanyal, on six, was giving company to Bangar, who struck 14 fours and two sixes from the 217 balls he faced today.
The Railways run-rate though was a tad low as they could get only 242 from the 94 overs they faced today at 2.57 runs an over. Opener V Cheluvaraj consumed as many as 58 balls for his 13.
Tamil Nadu used as many as seven bowlers but it was hard toil for all of them throughout the day.
Ashwin was the most successful Railway bowler with two wickets from his 33 overs. Abhinav Mukund and Suresh Kumar took a wicket apiece. India discard Lakshmipathy Balaji was wicketless from his 16 overs.
