Mazumdar enters Ranji record books

Amol Majumdar became the top run-getter in the history of the Ranji Trophy during the course of his 25 run knock against Rajasthan.

The former Mumbai player, who now turns up for Assam, needed just nine runs before the start of the second innings against Rajasthan at North-East Frontier Railway Stadium, Guwahati to overtake Amarjeet Kaypee's run-aggregate of 7,623 runs.

Majumdar was an instant success with his unbeaten 260 in the Ranji pre-quarter final for Mumbai against Haryana on his first-class debut in 1993-94. That was the highest first-class innings on debut and he went on to average over 100 in his debut season, including top-scoring for Mumbai in the Ranji Final.

Since then he never looked back, aggregating 9647 at an average of 48.97 in first-class cricket, including 24 hundreds and 55 fifties, apart from taking 150 catches in 146 matches.  In the third week of August this year, after being dropped from the Mumbai squad for the Buchi Babu competition, he decided to join Assam.
