Jesse Ryder to miss Tri Series

Injury troubles refuse to subside for New Zealand batting all-rounder Jesse Ryder, who injured his elbow and is now sidelined for the blackcaps’ tour of Sri Lanka next month.

The 25 year old cricketer struggled with a groin injury last year having appeared only at the ICC World Twenty20 in West Indies. He participated in the competition with torn ligaments in his elbow and made a total of 93 runs in five innings before finally conceding to the pain.

Mark Greatbatch, New Zealand coach and selector, while speaking to Cricinfo.com said: “Due to the compressed nature of the tour and his speed of recovery so far we feel we have insufficient time to get Jesse fully fit and able to take part in any of the one-day matches.”

"Therefore we have made the decision to keep Jesse in New Zealand where he will continue his rehabilitation from the elbow injury and return to playing as soon as possible," he added.

A substitute for the upcoming tri-series, involving India, will be named soon. With Daniel Vettori and Brendon McCullum absent due to their respective paternity leaves, Ross Taylor is in line to skipper the New Zealand side.

Greatbatch also believes it will be a major accomplishment if New Zealand clinched the Tri-Series. “The team is a relatively young side without Daniel Vettori and Brendon McCullum but it gives other players an opportunity to express their natural talent on the international stage.”

"We're building towards the first one-day international and are confident we will be ready when it really matters," he claimed.

New Zealand hit the road for Sri Lanka on August 1 and play against India first on August 10. They also compete in three practice games against Maharashtra in Darwin this week.
