AFC acts after Suwon, Al Sadd brawl
Five players and officials have been suspended in the wake of Wednesday's brawl at the AFC Champions League semi-final between Suwon Samsung Bluewings and Al Sadd.
Following the disgraceful scenes, the Asian Football Confederation has suspended Suwon player Ristikj Stevica and Suwon coach Ko Jong-su. The duo will now not be able to participate in the return leg Al Sadd on October 26.
Al Sadd players Keita Abdul Kader and Mamadou Hamidou Niang, along with goalkeeping coach Suhail Saber Ali are also suspended and ineligible for the second leg.
In Wednesday's incident at the Suwon World Cup Stadium in the Korea Republic, players and officials from the two teams squared up to each other for over 10 minutes after Niang scored a controversial 81st minute goal to give Qatari side Al Sadd a 2-0 lead.
The goal and Niang's subsequent wild celebrations sparked an angry reaction from the Suwon team, whose entire defence was still in the opposite half, expecting the ball to be returned to them after putting it out of play for treatment on two players in the Al Sadd penalty box.
Worse was still to come however, when a Suwon fan ran onto the pitch to berate the Al Sadd team and was apparently assaulted by one of their players, sparking off a second and more violent melee that included plenty of punches and kicks of the wrong kind.
The AFC has also opened disciplinary proceedings against the suspended players and officials, which will be referred to the AFC Disciplinary Committee for deliberation.
