Al Sadd crowned champions of Asia

Qatar's Al Sadd won the AFC Champions League title after edging out Korea Republic's Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors 4-2 on penalties.

It was an enthralling finish to Saturday's final which was locked at 2-2 heading into the shootout at the Jeonju World Cup Stadium.

Algerian midfielder Nadir Belhadj scored the decisive penalty after Al Sadd goalkeeper Mohamed Saqr followed up producing two key saves in a tightly contested 120 minutes by denying Jeonbuk's Kim Dong-chan and Park Won-jae in the shootout.

In front of a club record of over 41,000 spectators, Abdul Kader Keita's 61st minute strike appeared to have claimed victory for Al Sadd after Sim Woo-yeon's 30th minute own goal had cancelled out Eninho's superb free-kick only for Jeonbuk substitute Lee Sung-hyun to head home in second half stoppage time.

With a place at the 2011 FIFA Club World Cup at stake for the winners, Brazilian midfielder Eninho warmed the gloves of Al Sadd goalkeeper Saqr after five minutes to the delight of the vocal home support inside Jeonju World Cup Stadium before Luiz Henrique forced a regulation save from the visiting custodian.

With chances at a premium inside the early exchanges, Al Sadd's Senegalese striker Mamadou Niang sent a rising shot over the crossbar, while at the other end a glancing header from Jeonbuk target man Jeong Shung-hoon was easily gathered by Saqr at his near post.

But with 19 minutes on the clock the Al Sadd goalkeeper was left rooted to the spot as Eninho expertly guided a free-kick from the edge of the area around the wall and into the corner of the goal.

The Brazilian midfielder fired straight at Saqr three minutes later after finding space inside the Al Sadd area as Jeonbuk looked to extend their advantage.

But 15 minutes before the break Al Sadd equalised as Jeonbuk's Sim Woo-yeon could only divert Keita's flighted left wing cross over the head of goalkeeper Kim Min-sik while under pressure from Khalfan Ibrahim on the edge of the six-yard area with the custodian given little time to react as the ball skipped off the centre-backs head.

Jeonbuk substitute Kim Dong-chan, who replaced Jung Hoon shortly after half-time, almost made an instant impact after 52 minutes but could only shoot straight at Saqr as the home side made a bright start to the second half.

After scoring twice in the semi-final win over Saudi Arabia's Al Ittihad in similar fashion, only a smart tip over from Saqr denied Eninho a trademark goal direct from a corner just before the hour mark.

But despite Jeonbuk's second half dominance, Al Sadd took the lead a minute after the hour mark as Keita showed expert control inside the area before guiding a smart strike across Kim Min-sik's despairing dive and into the bottom corner.

Jeonbuk were unfortunate not to equalise with 20 minutes remaining as substitute Kim Dong-chan first headed against the Al Sadd post before the midfielders acrobatic shot from the rebound was blocked on the goalline by Wesam Rizik.

Jeonbuk coach Choi Kang-hee introduced tournament leading scorer Lee Dong-gook with 19 minutes remaining after the Korea Republic striker was adjudged to be short of match fitness following a calf injury.

Saqr produced a superb full length diving save to deny Jeong, who started in place of Lee, with two minutes remaining as the Al Sadd goalkeeper turned the strikers' crisp low strike onto the outside of the post.

But in the second minute of stoppage time, Jeonbuk were rewarded for their frantic finish to the 90 minutes as Lee Sung-hyun ghosted in at the back post to head home Eninho's corner.

Lee Dong-gook wasted the best chance of the first half of extra-time as the striker scuffed his shot wide from in front of the Al Sadd goal after the ball fortunately broke for the unmarked striker inside the penalty area.

Jeong was again denied by another diving save from Saqr with six minutes remaining in the second period of extra-time before Jeonbuk struck the post again following a melee inside the Al Sadd penalty area two minutes later.

Al Sadd substitute Ali Hassan Yahya was sent-off after picking up a second yellow card of extra-time with just over a minute remaining following a sustained period of pressure from Jeonbuk.

In the shootout, Al Sadd took a 2-1 lead as Saqr saved from Kim Dong-chan after Niang and Hasan Al Haydos had converted either side of Jeonbuk's Eninho.
Korea's Lee Jung-soo hit the crossbar for Al Sadd, but Saqr again guessed right to deny Park Won-jae.

Ibrahim Majed then converted for Al Sadd, and despite captain Kim Sang-sik keeping Jeonbuk in the contest, Belhadj held his nerve to beat Kim Min-sik.
