Persipura to play in Champions League

Indonesia's Persipura Jayapura will play in this season's AFC Champions League after the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) agreed to abide by a Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling to allow them entry.

The Indonesian champions are now set to play Adelaide United in a play-off on Thursday.

Persipura, winners of the 2010/11 Indonesian Super League (ISL), had originally not been nominated for a spot in Asia's elite event as they plied their trade in a league which the Indonesian Football Association, FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) all refused to recognise.

The Black Pearls sought help from CAS, with the arbitration body subsequently upholding the club's appeal against their exclusion. On Friday, the AFC confirmed that it would abide by the CAS ruling.

Persipura's joy may be short-lived however, with CAS set to make a final deliberation ahead of the first AFC Champions League group matches on March 6.

"(If Persipura are) later found disqualified due to CAS's final award and decision (which may be contradictory to the provisional decision), Adelaide United may replace Persipura Jayapura to participate in the AFC Champions League preliminary group stage," the AFC said.
