Heynckes: Bayern needs experienced coach

Jupp Heynckes believes Jurgen Klinsmann's failure at Bayern Munich proves that the job is not for young coaches.

Heynckes took over at Bayern after Klinsmann was sacked on April 27 and, with 13 points in five games, he led the Bavarians into the Champions League.

The 64-year-old now claims that Bayern made a huge mistake in appointing Klinsmann in the first place, particularly since he had yet to gather any experience in charge of a club in the past.

"Every coach has first got to learn this coaching handicraft, just like any person must learn their profession," he said.

"You cannot operate on somebody's heart when you have never stood at an operating table before.

"Whoever wants to coach Bayern Munich must have a few years experience under their belt."

What Klinsmann lacked in experience, he made up for with the image he had created for himself while in charge of the Germany national team.

He led them to third place at the 2006 World Cup and even managed to turn his greatest critic, Bayern's general manager Uli Hoeness, into one of his biggest admirers in the process.

According to Heynckes, it was his enthusiasm and ambitious plans which earned him the most prestigious coaching job in German football.

"The youngsters are good at selling themselves for their job," he added in the Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper.

"You get to the stage where people actually believe that you are the next best thing since sliced bread, until all the hype turns against you, like it did in Munich."

Heynckes turned down the opportunity of keeping the Bayern job on a full-time basis, despite impressing the club's bosses during his month in charge.

The 1998 Champions League winner with Real Madrid then agreed to return to the game as coach of Leverkusen after Bruno Labbadia left to take over at Hamburg.
