Dzeko returns to haunt Magath

One of Felix Magath's proteges came back to haunt him as Schalke fell to a 2-1 defeat against reigning champions Wolfsburg.

Edin Dzeko, who came from obscurity to hit 26 goals in a record-breaking partnership with Grafite last season, scored twice as the Wolves ran out winners at the Arena AufSchalke.

Magath led Wolfsburg to their maiden Bundesliga title last season before leaving to take charge of Schalke, and Dzeko showed little mercy to his former boss as he turned in the kind of display that made him such a revelation last term.

"It was a special game for everybody," he said. "We deserved to be champions under Magath and so I am happy that we have won."

While Dzeko was keen to remind Magath of what he had turned his back on, the new Royal Blues coach did not see much difference between the two teams.

"We did not deserve to lose," he said.

"We fought just like I imagine it and played how we could with our young troop.

"We also had four or five chances and made too little of them.

"Wolfsburg were overall the more mature team and maybe that is what made the difference."

For Magath's successor at Wolfsburg, Armin Veh, the win was particularly important, coming as it did on the back of three straight league defeats.

"We were solid and played a really well-organised game," he said.

The win takes the Wolves back into the top five while Schalke remain third with 10 points.
