Bayern Munich marked the start of the Oktoberfest with their third straight win by beating Nurnberg 2-1.

Ivica Olic broke Nurnberg's resistance in the 55th minute, but Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting equalised against the run of play in the 73rd minute.

Daniel Van Buyten provided the winner less than 10 minutes later as the record German champions broke into the top three for the first time this season.

Bayern coach Louis van Gaal once again left Franck Ribery on the bench to start with, although Arjen Robben was in the starting XI along with young striker Thomas Muller, whose four goals in the last two games meant Miroslav Klose took a place on the bench.

Nurnberg arrived in Munich with a defensive team, including two defensive midfielders - Peer Kluge and Havard Nordtveit - positioned just in front of the back four.

It was clear, then, that Nurnberg had come to defend a point and make life as hard as possible for their hosts.

They lasted 55 minutes, in which time Mario Gomez hit the crossbar and Raphael Schafer denied Muller in a one-on-one.

The Nurnberg custodian kept his side in the game during the first half, but he was powerless to deny Olic the opener.

Muller was the provider as he played the Croatian through from the edge of the area, and the former Hamburg striker scored his second goal of the season with a neat finish.

Nurnberg were on the back foot and their very rare ventures into the Bayern half drew ironic cheers from the majority of the 69,000 fans inside the Allianz Arena.

But the smile was wiped from their faces in the 73rd minute when Nurnberg substitute Choupo-Moting brought the side from Franconia level.

The goal was created by Nurnberg's 18-year-old midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, who showed a lot of composure in finding the pass into the path of his striker, who provided an equally comfortable finish.

Bayern had to respond and they did so immediately with Klose and Anatoliy Tymoschuk both testing Schafer.

Van Buyten, who was on target in Bayern's 3-0 victory over Maccabi Haifa in midweek, put his name on the scoresheet once again, diverting Robben's right-wing cross into the far corner with his head to seal the three points.
