Bochum 2-3 Mainz
Andre Schurrle struck a second-half brace as Mainz overturned a half-time deficit to edge a five-goal thriller at struggling Bochum
Mimoun Azaouagh had put the hosts ahead in the seventh minute and Diego Klimowicz restored that advantage on the stroke of half-time after Andreas Ivanschitz's 44th-minute equaliser.
But the match was turned on its head after the interval, Schurrle notching after 52 and 71 minutes to move his side up to fifth and leave Bochum languishing third from bottom.
It had all started so well for the home team, with Azaouagh breaking the deadlock after only seven minutes.
Mainz goalkeeper Christian Wetklo punched the ball back into play from Anthar Yahia's 25-yard free-kick and Azaouagh was on hand to pounce.
The visitors came close to levelling after 15 minutes from a Tim Hoogland header but Bochum goalkeeper Daniel Fernandes did well to save.
Schurrle's free-kick from the edge of the area then flew inches wide of the right-hand post as Mainz continued to press for the equaliser.
It arrived a minute before the break, Hoogland crossing for Ivanschitz to nod into the top-right corner.
However, far from dwelling on conceding the goal, Marcel Koller's team went straight back up the other end and scored a second. Klimowicz lashed home from 20 yards after Hoogland had half-cleared Phillipp Bonig's left-wing cross.
Bochum have lost three times away from home, but were undefeated in front of their own fans heading into this game.
But, seven minutes into the second period, Schurrle bagged his first as the visitors went about ending that proud record. He outpaced two Bochum defenders and fired past Fernandes to make it 2-2.
Aristide Bance could have notched the winner in the 68th minute when he connected with Ivanschitz's free-kick, but Fernandez managed to catch his header.
However, the visiting fans did not have to wait too much longer to celebrate the winner. Nineteen minutes from time, Schurrle found space amongst four home defenders to latch onto Ivanschitz's cross and slot home the winner.
