German DFB-Pokal Wed Review

Wolfsburg and Hamburg headlined the casualties on a night of shocks in the second round of the DFB-Pokal.

Reigning Bundesliga champions Wolfsburg crashed out after 3-2 loss at fellow top-flight outfit Cologne while Hamburg, currently top of the German league, bowed out after losing on penalties to third division outfit Osnabruck.

Wolfsburg fell 2-0 behind in the first half against Cologne as Manaseh Ishiaku (22 and 32) netted a brace. Edin Dzeko pulled one back for the Wolves after 56 minutes but Sebastian Freis restored Cologne's two-goal cushion after 65 minutes.

Sascha Riether reduced the deficit for Armin Veh's side 60 seconds later but the hosts held on for the win.

Hamburg were always on the ropes against a fired-up Osnabruck side and trailed 2-0 to strikes by Niels Hansen and Benjamin Siegert heading into the final 13 minutes.

Mladen Petric began the Bundesliga side's fightback with a goal after 77 minutes while Piotr Trochowski forced extra time with a 90th-minute penalty.

Guy Demel put Hamburg in front for the first time with a strike 10 minutes into the added period, but Henning Grieneisen levelled for the hosts to force a penalty shootout which Osnabruck won 4-2 after Hamburg's Robert Tesche saw his effort saved and Petric hit the post.

Last season's runners-up Bayer Leverkusen also bowed out after going down 2-1 at Kaiserslautern, Sidney Sam and Erik Jendrisek getting the goals for the victors while Theofanis Gekas' 86th-minute strike was in vain for the visitors.

Stuttgart needed extra time to see off fourth division outfit Lubeck.

Bastian Henning stunned the Bundesliga outfit when he fired the hosts into a sixth-minute lead and Stuttgart had to wait until the 77th minute to pull level as Julian Schieber fired home.

Goals from Sami Khedira and Cacau secured a hard-fought win for Markus Babbel's troops in the extra period.

Hertha Berlin's miserable form continued as they crashed out on penalties against second-tier 1860 Munich.

Hertha have lost five games on the spin to drop to the bottom of the Bundesliga and there was no respite this evening as 1860 posted a 4-1 win in the shootout after the sides ended extra time tied at 2-2.

Freiburg also crashed out at the hands of 2.Bundesliga opposition, Daniel Brinkmann's 63rd-minute effort securing a 1-0 win for Augsburg.

Holders Werder Bremen ran out 2-1 winners over St Pauli, Aaron Hunt and Ronaldo Naldo with the goals for the Bundesliga side, while Eintracht Frankfurt emerged victorious from the highest-scoring match of the night with a thumping 6-4 win over Alemania Aachen.
