Freiburg vs Bayern Munich Preview
Bayern Munich coach Louis van Gaal claims it would be pointless to sack him as doubts continue to be raised about his future at the club.
The Bavarian club are eight points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen in eighth position and, although the discussion about Van Gaal's future has been muted during the international break, tomorrow's trip to Freiburg has revived the debate.
But as far as the Dutchman is concerned, even a defeat at Freiburg would not signal the end of his reign in charge simply because there is nobody better than him on the market.
"If a new coach were to come, then how would his CV compare to mine?" asked Van Gaal.
"(Sir Alex) Ferguson and maybe (Fabio) Capello have won more than me, but they are already taken.
"I want to win in Freiburg. If not, does that mean Van Gaal goes? And then what happens? Another coach comes, and then does another one come after seven weeks?"
Nevertheless, Van Gaal realises the club's patience is wearing thin and three points at the Dreisam Stadion tomorrow are expected by everybody associated with Bayern.
"We need short-term success and that means we need the results immediately and to win the league," he said.
"I am a coach who works on a process and this needs time. It is up to FC Bayern whether they give me this time or not."
Hosts Freiburg will look to take advantage of Bayern's stuttering form to pick up some important points in their battle against relegation tomorrow.
A win would even take the newcomers above Bayern in the table, but coach Robin Dutt is not interested in that.
"We are not going to end the season above Bayern Munich," he said. "We have built up a cushion above the relegation zone and all we are interested in is either maintaining or extending this cushion."
Dutt is without the injured Jonathan Jager and Tommy Bechmann while Pavel Krmas is also doubtful with a calf strain.
Luca Toni could make his season's debut for Bayern Munich, who are without Franck Ribery and Ivica Olic, while captain Mark van Bommel and winger Arjen Robben are also back in the squad.
