Nurnberg vs Werder Bremen Preview
Werder Bremen will look to extend their unbeaten streak of 16 matches when they head to Nurnberg's Franken Stadion.
Thomas Schaaf's men lost to Eintracht Frankfurt on the opening day of the season, but have since recorded 12 wins and four draws.
That has kept Bremen in contention in three competitions - the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and Europa League - but tomorrow promises to be one of their toughest challenges of the season so far.
Marcelo Moreno broke his jaw in the DFB-Pokal victory over Kaiserslautern on Wednesday while Claudio Pizarro is still carrying the ankle injury which ruled him out in midweek and Hugo Almeida is several weeks away from a comeback.
That leaves Marko Marin and Markus Rosenberg as the only two fit strikers for the trip to Bavaria.
"I am sure I will be able to conjure up 11 players for my team in Nurnberg," joked Schaaf, who has reason to smile despite the injury crisis.
A win tomorrow could take Bremen to the top of the Bundesliga, a lofty position they last held at the end of the 2003/04 title-winning season.
And Aaron Hunt sees no reason why the 2009/10 campaign cannot follow suit.
"I think that we are mature enough to win the league," he said. "If we carry on the way we are going then we are certainly going to be up there at the end."
Nurnberg coach Michael Oenning has a lot of respect for Bremen's 16-game unbeaten streak, but claims that gives his side even more motivation to win tomorrow.
"You always hope to be the one who breaks such a series," he said.
He may ponder giving Angelos Charisteas a rare start against the side with whom he enjoyed the most memorable year of his career.
In 2004, Charisteas not only won a league and cup double for Bremen, but scored the winning goal for Greece at the European Championships and, although his career has never reached such heights since, he is fit again after a niggling injury and ready to return.
