The German Super Cup will become part of the footballing calendar from next season for the first time in 14 years.

That was decided at the annual general meeting of the German Football League (DFL) in Frankfurt.

The event's reintroduction received majority approval and will see the Bundesliga champions clash with the DFB-Pokal winners in the official prelude to the 2010/11 football season.

"Fans can look forward to a highly-attractive sporting occasion," said DFL president Dr Reihnard Rauball.

"The clash between the champions and the cup winners is already extremely popular in many European countries and has a great tradition."

Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund first tried to revive the Super Cup two years ago, but their friendly match was not officially recognised as such by the DFL or the German Football League (DFB).

Last summer, Wolfsburg and Werder Bremen also met in a pre-season friendly billed as the Super Cup, but again, not under the official auspices of the DFL and the DFB.

Since the League Cup, which used to precede the season until two years ago, has now been scrapped, room for the reintroduction of the Super Cup has become available and the game will be the official curtain-raiser to the new domestic football season.

It has already been speculated the game may take place in the Far East, where the DFL is looking to increase brand awareness of the Bundesliga, however the precise venue and date will be communicated at a later date.
