Schalke 2-0 Hannover

Schalke 2-0 Hannover

Schalke overcame a spirited effort by Hannover to move into third place in the Bundesliga.

Jefferson Farfan opened the scoring for the hosts after 69 minutes and Jan Moravek finished off Hannover with a goal one minute into stoppage time.

Hannover were playing their first game since the suicide of their goalkeeper Robert Enke, and there was a minute's silence before the game commemorating the loss of the Germany international.

The Hannover team also wore a number one - Enke's number - on the the front of their shirts, but the emotion of the day could not produce a winning display from Hannover, who lost for only the second time in six to remain on 16 points, and in 10th place in the standings.

Schalke extended their undefeated streak to seven games but ended a three-game winless run to move onto 25 points - one behind Werder Bremen and Bayer Leverkusen.

Enke's deputy Florian Fromlowitz was tested early on and made a fine save from Christoph Moritz after eight minutes.

Schalke keeper Manuel Neuer showed his skills a minute later when denying Didier Ya Konan's drilled effort.

Neuer again denied Ya Konan four minutes before the break, fending away the Ivorian's effort from 18 yards.

Fromlowitz was again alert to deny Kevin Kuranyi after 54 minutes, while Neuer's fine reaction save from a deflected shot by Arnold Bruggink seven minutes later kept Schalke on level terms.

Farfan gave the hosts the lead with 21 minutes to play as he headed home Rafinha's corner from the right.

Kuranyi beat Fromlowitz just two minutes later but his shot went just left of the far post, but Moravek put the result beyond doubt in stoppage time, firing home on the rebound after Fromlowitz denied Lukas Schmitz.
