Louis van Gaal's future as coach of Bayern Munich bleaker after his side were held to their fourth draw by Bayer Leverkusen.

Mario Gomez gave Bayern the lead in the eighth minute, but in-form striker Stefan Kiessling replied six minutes later with a goal which was good enough to take Leverkusen back above Werder Bremen at the top of the table and maintain their unbeaten record this season.

And Bayern left the field to a chorus of whistles from 69,000 fans who have almost forgotten what it feels like to see their team win at home.

The only consolation for Bayern is that the point takes them above Wolfsburg into seventh in the table.

Leverkusen almost made a flying start when Kiessling's goalbound header was blocked by Daniel van Buyten in the fourth minute.

But it was Bayern who went ahead four minutes later when Gomez scored his first goal in over two months, benefitting from a slightly fortunate pass from Miroslav Klose before placing his shot past Rene Adler.

The goal lifted the hosts, who had a chance to double their lead moments later when the same two strikers combined, but Sami Hyypia got in to clear the danger.

Kiessling's equaliser in the 14th minute came almost against the run of play with the Germany forward beating the offside trap before skipping past Van Buyten and picking his spot beyond Hans-Jorg Butt.

Kiessling thought he had put Leverkusen ahead in the 22nd minute, but his goal was ruled out for a tight offside decision.

Moments later, Kiessling had another excellent chance to beat Butt, but the Bayern goalkeeper made an instinctive save.

Another disputable offside call denied Bayern the chance of going ahead early in the second half when Thomas Muller was stopped in his tracks as he latched onto Mark van Bommel's through-ball.

The fans started to vent their frustration as Bayern failed to take control of the game, but they had the chance to steal all three points in the end when Gomez went close just in front of Adler.

But the ball would not go in as the pressure increases on Van Gaal, who now turns his attention to Wednesday's vital Champions League tie against Maccabi Haifa.
