Bochum vs Bayern Munich Preview

Louis van Gaal has warned Bayern Munich to give opponents Bochum the same respect they afforded Juventus in the Champions League.

Bayern secured a place in the last 16 of Europe's elite competition in midweek with a 4-1 win in Turin.

Their Bundesliga form has been patchy this season and Van Gaal is demanding they focus fully on domestic matters this weekend.

"It is easier for the players to focus on an opponent like Juventus, or a must-win game," he explained.

"Bochum on Saturday is not a must-win game. If we lose, we can still win the league.

"That makes it harder for us to focus."

Bochum coach Heiko Herrlich does not expect Bayern to arrive at the Ruhr Stadion believing they have already won the game.

"If I am reading the reactions of their players and coach correctly, then they are certainly taking us seriously," he said.

"But we are on a positive run with five points from the last three games and we want to extend that."

Herrlich nevertheless praised Bayern for their midweek victory, saying it is "good for German football when the top side goes through", but for him, preparing to face Bayern is no different to preparing any other game.

"We are Bochum and we deserve respect as a Bundesliga side," he said.

"Just like we respect our opponent, whether they are called Cologne or Bayern."

Mimoun Azaouagh has been included in the Bochum squad after he missed the 1-1 draw with Stuttgart last weekend, but Anthar Yahia is still injured.

Van Gaal may consider rotating his squad a little after the win over Juventus, but that is still not likely to mean a return to action for Luca Toni, whose days at the club appear numbered.

Franck Ribery is still short of match fitness although he may appear for Bayern against Hertha Berlin in their final game of 2009 next weekend.
