Van Gaal: I was misquoted on Toni
Bayern Munich coach Louis van Gaal has set the record straight after being quoted as saying that Luca Toni will be sold this winter.
Although Van Gaal and the Italian striker rarely see eye to eye, the Dutch coach claimed he had been misquoted by Italy's Corriere dello Sport newspaper.
"All I told them is what I said in the press conference before the game," he said.
"They just misinterpreted my words and heard what they wanted to hear out of my mouth."
Van Gaal stated before the win over Juventus on Tuesday that Toni had made a mistake and did not fulfil the requirements of a Bayern player, however, he admitted today that the player's future remains open.
"Of course it is not up to me alone to make decisions about such a person," he said.
"That is particularly up to the board."
Nevertheless, the 32-year-old is still unlikely to be a Bayern player going into the second half of the season.
Roma and Inter Milan have both shown an interest in the striker, who is keen to return home to boost his chances of representing his country at the World Cup next summer.
"One thing is for sure: I will be returning to Italy," he told Italy's Chi magazine earlier this week.
