Stirring debut for Herrmann
There was only one winner in the Rhein derby on Friday night as Cologne and Borussia Monchengladbach shared a 1-1 draw.
Gladbach midfielder Patrick Herrmann made his first ever start at the age of 19 and his performance suggested the club might have found another winger to follow in the footsteps of Marko Marin.
Gladbach's director of sport Max Eberl said: "Patrick had already shown when he came on as a sub (last week) how cheeky and composed he is when he plays.
"He did that today too. I am delighted that a young player has made the breakthrough.
"It was wonderful to see how he dribbled past (Pierre) Wome to make an impact on the game."
Herrmann was Gladbach's man of the match in a game they really should have won.
An equalising goal 10 minutes from time from Maniche earned the home team a point, but did not save coach Zvonimir Soldo from plenty of criticism.
Calls for him to be sacked were already spreading around the Mungersdorfer Stadion before Maniche's goal provided a bit of respite.
The Croatian coach said his side had earned the point which still, however, leaves them a little too close to the relegation zone for comfort.
"It was an important game for both sides," he said.
"A derby match is always special.
"It was very even overall and in the end we took more risks and we also deserved our goal."
Cologne are just five points above the Bundesliga's bottom three, although they have now played one game more than the clubs below them.
