Jose remains upbeat after Inter stumble

Inter coach Jose Mourinho is convinced of his side's chances of making the second round despite the latest set-back.

Inter were held to a 1-1 draw by Werder Bremen in a Champions League Group B encounter on Wednesday night.

The Nerazzurri lead the group with four points from their first two games with Bremen lying in third place with two points.

"I am 100% convinced we will qualify for the knockout stage," said Mourinho.

"I don't really like a draw, but if we analyse the situation, we have four points and have to play Anorthosis.

"This is a mini competition with four teams and, in theory, any one of us could lose, but I think Inter have to win the next two games to be qualified before we go to Bremen.

"I have no doubts we will be in the second round."

The 30,000 fans inside the San Siro probably expected an easy win from their side, given the way they jeered their team at the final whistle.

But Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf was not surprised at all with the result.

"With all the respect for any opponent, particularly a side like Inter, when you play in the Champions League, you have got to try to take a point or some points with you," he said.

"It was our intention to do that today."

It took Bremen half an hour to get into the game, by which point they were already one behind thanks to a goal from Inter full-back Maicon, but Schaaf was never worried about his side's ability to get back into the game.

"We just needed to relax a bit more and prepare better," he said.

"The goal was a great example of this. In the first half, we attacked in the same manner, but we were less prepared; for the goal, we waited for the right moment and were more prepared."

Claudio Pizarro came back to haunt his former coach at Chelsea with a deserved equaliser for Bremen in the 62nd minute.

Inter may have been regarded as the favourites following their win in Panathinaikos in the opening group game but after losing at the San Siro to AC Milan in Serie A on Sunday, they risked a second successive loss against the Germans.

And given the way the game evolved, Schaaf was more disappointed than delighted with the outcome.

"If we keep just getting draws, then we will not go through," he said.

"We have got to get better."
