Aguirre hails 'important step'

Atletico Madrid boss Javier Aguirre described his side's Champions League win over Marseille as "an mportant" step forward.

Atletico made it two victories out of two in Group D with Wednesday's 2-1 triumph at the Vicente Calderon and are now in a great position to make it through to the knock-out stages.

All three of the goals were scored in an action-packed opening 22 minutes, with strikes from Sergio Aguero and Raul Garcia for the home side sandwiching an equaliser from Mamadou Niang.

Atletico may have run out of steam a bit after an impressive first period, but that did not bother Aguirre, whose side are now level with Liverpool at the top of Group D, six points above Marseille and PSV Eindhoven.

"We've taken a very important step, as at home we were obliged to win," said Aguirre.

"We played a good first half, while in the second we felt a bit of fatigue and it was harder for us to find the spaces against a good opponent."

Aguero's fourth-minute opener took the 20-year-old striker's tally to six goals since returning to Atletico this summer after helping fire Argentina to Olympic gold.

The highly-rated hitman said: "I'm happy for the win and for this goal, which helped calm us.

"We won the game well and the three points are very important for us. We now have to take things step by step."
