Wenger: We simply must perform
Arsene Wenger says Arsenal can have no excuses if they fail to deliver against Fenerbahce on Tuesday.
The Gunners head to Istanbul top of Group G, following their 4-0 rout of Porto in north London.
Another convincing performance against the Turks would go a long way to securing themselves safe passage into the knockout stages.
However, last season Chelsea were beaten 2-1 in the first leg of their quarter-final tie and so were under extra pressure before eventually coming through at Stamford Bridge.
English clubs are no strangers to the unique Sukru Saracoglu Stadium welcome which will await Arsenal in the eastern outpost of the Champions League.
Wenger, though, insists his men must remain focused on the job in hand.
"In football you never have to look to any excuse," said the Arsenal manager.
"For me, when you are on the football pitch, you have personality - and as a top-level man, you play the game you can play. Are people shouting or not around you? That is not very important."
Arsenal had to dig deep to secure a last-gasp draw from their opening game away to Dynamo Kiev.
Wenger expects another battling performance to maintain the momentum.
"For us, it is important to be consistent - so to go to Turkey and win would improve the confidence of our squad, because that had been hurt a bit recently," he said.
"We have shown great promise in the first part of the Champions League and now we want to add to that consistency."
Fenerbahce are now under the guidance of former Spain manager Luis Aragones but sit bottom of Group G with just one point from their two outings.
A stalemate at home to Dynamo followed a 3-1 defeat at Porto - and the fanatical Turkish support will be sure to crank up the pressure for a positive result.
Arsenal goalkeeper Manuel Almunia feels that can work in favour of the Barclays Premier League side.
"I saw one of the Fenerbahce home games, and the atmosphere was terrible," said Almunia, who was team-mates with Fenerbahce forward Daniel Guiza at RC Recreativo de Huelva for part of the 2002/03 season.
"However, the good thing is that they are not playing very well at the moment - which is great for us.
"I expect we will face a team ready to fight but I hope our players show big character, because we will need that there."
Almunia told Arsenal TV Online: "This season has been a bit strange for our team, because we have had fantastic performances - and then on the other side one or two which have not been good.
"Maybe we have to find the balance between that, which is what we had last season.
"It is not about the age of the team; it is about the concentration of every single player."
