Terry still obsessed with 'big ears'
John Terry admits he is obsessed with winning the Champions League before setting off for the World Cup in South Africa next year.
Terry could have sealed Europe's top trophy for Chelsea just over a year ago but missed in the final shoot-out, then this season they were controversially denied penalties by referee Tom Henning Ovrebo in their semi-final clash against Barcelona.
Next on Terry's agenda is the World Cup qualifiers, against Kazakhstan this weekend then Andorra on Wednesday, before switching his focus back to club matters.
The 28-year-old has been encouraged by the appointment of Carlo Ancelotti and owner Roman Abramovich appearing to target the world's top players - so the only thing left is to become European champions.
"It's become something of an obsession for me," Terry said. "It does hurt. A year goes by, you're a year older.
"This could be the moment we take that extra step as certain players under contract to keep the side together as well as bringing a few big players in.
"Especially with the new manager coming in. He might bring a bit extra in also."
Terry admitted it felt like he was lifting the wrong trophy when Chelsea won the FA Cup at Wembley last Saturday.
"It was still a nice achievement for us after a couple of years without a trophy," he said. "But at the back of my mind I was hoping I could rewind it and that it was the Champions League.
"But that's gone. It's down to me to live with that, and I do have to every day, too.
"If we can add a couple of new signings, we've got a great manager in, and maybe this is the push the club needed."
Ovrebo took much of the blame for the Barca defeat, although Terry sat on the fence about the Norwegian carrying on refereeing.
"You do want the best referees for the big games," was as far as he went.
