CSKA Moscow 2-1 Besiktas
CSKA Moscow saw off a late spell of pressure from Besiktas and claim a 2-1 victory in the Champions League at the Luzhniki Stadium.
Alan Dzagoev, who was on target in the 3-1 defeat to the Wolves, gave CSKA an early lead with his superb seventh-minute strike before Milos Krasic made it two in the second half.
Besiktas finally put together some meaningful possession in the last few minutes, capped off with a memorable finish from Ekrem Dag.
Dzagoev had the first shot of the night after only three minutes, but his was a poor effort and rolled tamely wide of the right-hand post.
His second effort was considerably better, though, and put the home side ahead in the most emphatic of fashions.
Rodrigo Tello's foul on Tomas Necid set the move in motion and from Pavel Mamaev's deep free-kick the ball eventually found its way to Dzagoev, who hammered a stunning shot past Rustu Recber from 30 yards.
Krasic teed up Necid for a headed effort after 10 minutes, but this time Rustu was able to gather.
Shell-shocked by CSKA's rampant opening spell, the Turkish side eventually mustered an attempt of their own, Filip Holosko aiming a powerful effort just inside the far post before Igor Akinfeev pulled off a fine save.
Winger Mark Gonzalez combined with Sergei Ignashevich after 20 minutes to create another chance for the home side, the latter sending his shot blazing over the crossbar.
Besiktas continued to concede fouls as they tried to muscle their opponents out of the game, Ismail Koybasi receiving the game's first yellow card and Dzagoev again finding a shooting chance following an Ibrahim Kas foul.
Ignashevich fancied his chances from a free-kick 35 yards from goal but failed to extend Rustu.
Besiktas, increasingly struggling to make their mark, then lost Holosko to injury before the first half was out.
The visitors brightened after that setback, with Nihat Kahveci and Mert Nobre both getting shots away at Akinfeev's goal, but Dzagoev's goal continued to separate them at the interval.
CSKA again came out of the blocks quickest after the restart, Mamaev and Fabian Ernst both finding space to shoot in the first five minutes of the second period.
A phase of scrappy play from both sides ensued, with the referee the busiest man on the field until Krasic popped up on the edge of the penalty area to steer home his side's second of the match.
Nihat was lively for Besiktas, while Gonzalez enjoyed plenty of possession for the Russians. By now, the most likely source of a third goal appeared to be a corner but both sets of defenders dealt with this threat competently.
There was a late flurry from the away team in the closing moments, Kas forcing a smart reaction save from Akinfeev, then a half-hearted penalty shout from Tomas Sivok.
Ekrem Dag finally turned that pressure into a goal in stoppage time.
Deivson Bobo played him in with a square ball, with Dag taking one touch to lift the ball of the ground a second to volley unstoppably past Akinfeev.
