Player Ratings for United-CSKA
ESPNSTAR.com brings you the player ratings for the Manchester United-CSKA Moscow match that took place at Old Trafford.
By Vincent Lai
Man United came back from a two-goal deficit thanks to goals from Paul Scholes and Antonio Valencia late in the game, after CSKA went up 3-1 early in the second half, thanks to the real grass at the Theatre of Dreams.
Manchester United:
Edwin van der Sar: 2
The Dutchman did a poor job in this match, as he somehow let Alan Dzagoev blast the ball past him for CSKA's first goal. Van der Sar could not, however, stop Moscow's second goal. But he was totally at fault for CSKA's third as he let Vasili Berezutsky headed roll past him into the back of the net.
Gary Neville: 6
Tried his best to lead the line while contributing to Man United's offence, but he's lost a few steps, to be honest.
Wes Brown: 4
Had a horrible game, as he let Dzagoev get past him for the first goal, then played Krasic on-side for the second.
Jonny Evans: 4
As horrible as Brown, for the same reasons.
Fabio Da Silva: 5 (off 59th)
The youngster was dreadful in defence, but did enough attacking to have a fair game. Ran and ran and ran.
Antonio Valencia: 7
Had a decent game as the tested Mamaev and Akinfeev time and time again. Scored a last-gasp equaliser to spare United's blushes.
Darren Fletcher: 5
Apart from a long shot early on, the Scotsman was quiet throughout the game.
Paul Scholes: 7
Had a dismal game early on. but redeemed himself somewhat by scoring United's second in the 84th minute.
Nani: 7 (off 58th)
Laid the backheel that resulted in Owen's goal for the Red Devils. Was a treat on the ball, but did not threatened much despite his moments of magic.
Federico Macheda: 6 (off 82nd)
Tried had to manufacture opportunities on goal. Had a great start to the game, but faded as the game wore on.
Michael Owen: 7
Scored off Nani's backheel, and had the whole goal to himself as Akinfeev was left flatfooted to his right.
Subs:
Patrice Evra: 5 (on 59th)
Was more solid on defence than Fabio.
Wayne Rooney: 6 (on 58th)
New daddy Wayne missed at least three chances to drag Man United back into the game. Luckily, the Red Devils came back.
Gabriel Obertan: 5 (on 82nd)
Was spectacularly unspectacular.
CSKA Moscow:
Igor Akinfeev: 7
Was definitely the busier of the two keepers. Saved shots from Scholes, Macheda, Fletcher and Owen, to name a few, as the Red Devils all lined up to have a shot at CSKA's goal from distance. Even shut out new daddy Rooney, but could do nothing to stop Brown's header late in the game, as well as Valencia's deflected equaliser at the death.
Alexei Berezutsky: 6
Stout in defence and shackled Nani enough, but lost sight of him when he backheeled the ball for Owen's goal.
Vasili Berezutsky: 7
Scored CSKA's third goal as he headed a freekick past a flailing van der Sar. Could not contain Valencia as the winger bagged United's third.
Sergei Ignashevich: 6
Defended deep and shielded Akinfeev on most occasions.
Georgi Shchennikov: 6
Another human shield for Akinfeev, another target board for United.
Milos Krasic: 8
Scored a beauty of a goal when he ghosted past the United defence (while remaining on-side) to receive the ball off a one-two to poke the ball past a bewildered van der Sar.
Deividas Semberas: 6
Ran his heart out and was effective in countering the Red Devil's slow-footed centre midfield pairing of Scholes and Fletcher.
Evgeni Aldonin: 6
Another guy who ran his socks off.
Pavel Mamaev: 7 (off 70th)
Gets a seven for sacrificing his face to block Valencia's cross. Was bleeding from the mouth as he continued to shut down United's midfield.
Tomas Necid: 6 (off 85th)
Caused Manchester United enough problems with his intelligent running and through passes.
Alan Dzagoev: 8 (off 72nd)
How in the world did he blast the ball past van der Sar while running out of the pitch? Must have been the traction provided by the real grass at Old Trafford. Spectacular goal as the striker scored his third Champions League goal in four matches.
Subs:
Daniel Carvalho: 5 (on 72nd)
Sent on for the tiring Dzagoev. Didn't do a lot though.
Nika Piliyev: 5 (on 85th)
Who?
Elvir Rahimic: 5 (on 70th)
Was pretty much anonymous.
