Arsenal vs Standard Liege Preview

Arsenal will seek to secure qualification for the last 16 of the Champions League with victory over Standard Liege.

After a 1-0 Barclays Premier League defeat at Sunderland last weekend ended a 13-match unbeaten run in all competitions, Wenger conceded his team must improve going forwards against the Belgians tomorrow night.

Victory would clinch top spot in Group H with a match to spare - a scenario which perhaps seemed unlikely when Arsenal were 2-0 down inside five minutes of the opening game in Liege.

"We had some deficiencies which we paid for and we have to make sure that is not repeated," said the Arsenal manager.

"We did not produce enough in the final third, which had been our strength until now.

"We did not have the right fluency in our game, nor enough penetrative runs to force the issue in the final part of the pitch.

"That is why we were not dangerous, rather than down to any individual.

"I do not deny at all the super-class of Van Persie, I just feel we still have enough in the locker to score goals even when Robin is not there."

Wenger, who will have England Under-21 defender Kieran Gibbs available again after a foot injury, added: "We have a good opportunity tomorrow to finish first in the group and qualify, then after we can think about Chelsea.

"The perfect way is to respond after a disappointing result, that is where you judge a big team and that is what we want to do tomorrow."

Standard Liege coach Laszlo Boloni is expecting another severe test for his Champions League newcomers, with defeat tomorrow all but ending chances of qualification for the knockout stages.

"Arsenal have some warriors in their team, they are not young lambs," he said.

"It is easy to say 'to go to war', but without the ball it is very difficult.

"We must have strength to do more than that.

"We will be organised and with our strength we will try to do the maximum so that they will respect us."

Boloni has always been full of admiration for Wenger's football vision - but feels his current young Arsenal side may just be missing something in their quest for European glory.

Boloni - whose side raced into an early 2-0 lead inside the first five minutes of their opening Group H game against the Gunners in Belgium, before losing 3-2 - maintains while Arsenal are certainly are among the European heavyweights, they remain just short of complete dominance.

"I feel the policy of Arsenal is something really incredible and admiral," said the Romanian, who coached a young Cristiano Ronaldo while at Sporting Lisbon.

"Arsene Wenger's policy and they way he manages is very intelligent, and the way he manages his game is also very intelligent.

"I remember discussing with him when I was a young trainer, I was really admiring his intelligence and also his vision about the future of the club - but in comparison to Real Madrid, Barcelona or Chelsea, maybe they lack something."
